Tharavad, the typical Kerala style home built by the renowned practitioner of Ayurveda, Shoolpani Vaidyar is a cozy destination to experience the vibrant natural beauty of Kerala and be one with nature. This multi-bedroom homestead provides a traditional Alappuzha experience. The Vasthu based construction renders an atmosphere of serenity and bliss. The terracotta tiled roof with polished teakwood planks covering every room and the traditionally laid flooring mixed with proportion of burnt coconut kernel and egg-white is a natural room cooling marvel of yesteryears. Furniture made of teak and rosewood adds to the gloss of the native setting and are of antique value. The living room boasts of a collection of antiques in brass ad wood. Gateway to Backwaters & Arabian Sea ...

A small town on the cost of the Arabian Sea, Alappuzha has been a much sought tourist destination for its meandering canals flowing through the town and the mesmerizing expanse of backwaters. The wharf on the beach is a testimony to the fact that Alappuzha was a trading port for ages. Kuttanad, the rice bowl of South Kerala is famed for its "below the sea level faming". The Venice os Asia is renowned for its coir industry. Rice and fish is the staple diet. For a total Alappuzha experience traverse the canals on small vallams (Boats) or anchor in the middle of the backwater lakes on a Kettuvallam (rice boat converted to cozy house boats) - spend the night under the star lit sky, listening to the splash of water on to the boat. If you are a fishing enthusiast, cast the net-wait for your big catch - sufficient for a spicy dinner of rice and fish. Kettuvallam ...

Long before the coming of the rail and the road, waterways were the best mode of transport. Kuttanadan rice was transported to nearby markets of Kottayam, Kollam and Cochin by long rice boats which just had a small hut for the boatman called Kettuvallams. Some if these Kettuvallams have now been converted into luxury single and double bedroom houseboats for cruises and overnight stay in the backwaters.
