Devaswom Institute Of Mural Painting - An Institute For Traditional
Kerala Mural Painting
The year 1970 witnessed a fire tragedy in the Guruvayoor Temple
Complex. The sreekovil (Sanctum Sanctum) was damaged and the
paintings on the three walls also were lost in the accident.
When the walls were to be decorated again with paintings as
a part of the renovation, the authorities found that the artists
who could do the work were very few, but the available few artists,
Mammiyur Krishnankutty Nair, M.K. Sreenivasan and K.K. Varier
completed the job satisfactory. That the tradition of mural
paintings is to be preserved, became a serious thought for the
authorities , artists and art lovers and the result was the
establishment of the Institute of Mural Painting at Kizhakke
Nada ( Eastern Side ) of Guruvayoor Temple by the Guruvayoor
Devaswom in the month of July, 1989. The Institute gives coaching
in mural painting in the traditional gurukula pattern. The five
year National Diploma Course offers training in Fine arts for
the first two years as a preparatory one after which the students
are given three years specialised coaching in traditional Kerala
Mural Painting. Traditional Kerala Mural Painting is done only
in five colours (PANCHAVARNA) such as yellow, red, green, black
and white. White is the wall itself and all other pigments are
prepared from atones and leaves. The wall preparation is an
elaborate process and on the specially prepared wall, the picture
is drawn first in line and completed in the above mentioned
five colours. Most of the pictures are done based on 'dhyanasloka'.
Among the palace picture those in the Mattancherry Palace
are adjudged by many scholars as structure the best. The structure
of the epic narration of Ramayana is visually transformed
onto the walls. Most of the human forms have stylized facial
expressions and gestures whose origin can be traced to the
theatrical elements of acting in Koodiyattam and Kathakali.
The wide-open round eyes elongated painted lips, stylized
body postures, over ornamentation, hand gestures etc. can
be compared with the classical theatre of Kerala. As the patronage
connected with feudalism became weak and the aversion towards
the caste system imposed on society became stronger among
the people , the age old temple culture started eroding in
the 20th century. Along with the new pictorial awareness given
to us by the British Academic Naturalism, the influence of
Ravi Varma's style also peeped into the mural composition
in the very few works executed in the 20th century. Confined
to the temple walls, the Kerala mural painting could not break
the barrier of stereotyped figural and spatial composition
till now, but as a number of secular walls have been commissioned
by people presently, the Kerala traditional wall painting
through very feeble, has growth in style and also in the matter
of themes

| Sopanam School Of
Hotel Management |
SOPANAM SCHOOL OF HOTEL MANAGEMENT was inaugurated on August
6th '00 by Shri, E. Chandrasekharan Nair Hon. Minister - Food
& Civil Supplies, Tourism and Law. SSHM is the only college
in Thrissur which offers a hospitality course in the campuses
of one of the best 3 star hotels Sopanam Heritage, where the
training is given in an entirely new and exciting manner by
professionally qualified executives who carry behind a vast
working experience in major groups like the Oberoi , the Taj
and the Welcome Group. Our executive Chef, Mr. Raveendran, who
is from the 'Hilton Group of Hotels', will be giving the essential
finishing touch to all students of culinary courses. The curriculum
has been designed to enhance students abilities and desire to
learn and to inculcate an understanding of the ideas, traditions
and values of their own cultures and most importantly, to prepare
them to apply the concepts and techniques learnt in class to
both general and specialised hotels and to give the best to
the hotel industry and to the guest.
The paradox of our time in history is that we have: taller buildings,
but shorter tempers; wider freeways but narrower viewpoints;
we spend more; but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less;
we have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences,
but less time; we have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge,
but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine,
but less wellness; we have multiplied our possessions, but reduced
our values; we talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too
often; we've learned how to make a living, but not a life; we've
added years ti life, not life to years; we've been all the way
to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to
meet the new neighbor; we've conquered outer space, but not
inner space; we've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul;
we've split the atom, but not our prejudice. We have higher
incomes, but lower morals ; We've become long on quantity, but
short on quality. These are the times of world peace, but domestic
warfare; more leisure, but less fun; more kinds of food , but
less nutrition.; These are days of two incomes, but more divorce.
